Message
from the President
Jacqueline
Boone James, Radcliffe Institute
I
am still buzzing with the energy and excitement that was present
at the SSHD biennial meeting here in Cambridge, November 1-2, and
the meeting of the Emerging Adulthood group that followed. Both
speakers and attendees were alive with provocative ideas; discussion
was rich and bold. The poster session was a standout with some 53
presenters. And some 15-20 people came forward to volunteer for
greater involvement with the society. Read more about the meeting
in this issue of The Networker! We are already making plans for
our fourth biennial meeting in 2005; watch for a call for papers
and program announcements on our website and in future issues of
The Networker.
I
am thrilled to be your President, a new title conferred upon the
leader of the Steering Committee at the business meeting. I am delighted
to take on this responsibility and look forward to working with
Susan Whitbourne, President-elect, Erin Phelps, executive secretary,
and the very wonderful and collegial members of the Steering Committee.
We must now fully exploit all of this positive energy and get to
work on the challenges ahead. Just a few things on the list are:
-Move
the home base of the society to Tufts University, to the Applied
Developmental Science Institute, where the journal is also produced.
This represents a more efficient way to organize our many activities.
-Oversee
the distribution of the first issue of our Journal, Research in
Human Development, edited by Jacquelynne S. Eccles. The theme of
the first issue is: "Innovative Methods for Studying Lives
in Context," Richard Lerner, guest editor. It is due out in
March. We are looking forward to getting those in the mail to you
as a benefit of your membership. We need to get at least 200 library
subscriptions for the journal to alleviate some of the financial
burden to the society, so please send in requests for subscriptions
from Erlbaum to your library now.
-Grow the membership and as we do, get the scheduled membership
dues aligned with the calendar year. You can expect to hear from
us soon requesting renewals for 2004. Remember that multiple-year
renewals are possible, and you save by not having to pay annual
increases. Please encourage your colleagues to join.
-Most
importantly, I look forward to welcoming and engaging the talents
of all the volunteers who stepped forward and offered their services
to the society. Their enthusiasm was contagious and the main reason
for my buzzing. I remain available to your input, suggestions, and
offers for help at j_james@harvard.edu.
Greetings
from the President-Elect
Susan
Whitbourne, University

SSHD
is at an important turning point in our short, but active,
early developmental phases. We are well past the "terrible
twos," and as we enter our fifth year as a group, have
taken increasing steps toward
maturation. As Jackie James mentioned in her message, the
first issue of our journal will be published in the next few
months. The Networker, thanks to Brian Little's editorial
acumen, is serving an important function of keeping all of
our membership aware of the society's activities, job openings,
and other relevant news for our members. We are making great
progress toward our membership goals. In Eriksonian terms,
we are also successfully resolving the phase of generativity
as we continue to expand our student membership and bring
them into the professional fold. We owe great thanks to Margie
Lachman and Bill Kurtines for their outstanding and creative
ideas to grow our membership at all levels. The Cambridge
conference was a terrific success, thanks to the work of Gisela
Labouvie-Vief, Jackie, Rich, and the local committee spearheaded
by Monica Brooker. As we plan for our 2005 meeting, we look
forward to input from the membership so that we can continue
to provide the type of excellent programming that has distinguished
our three conferences thus far. As President-elect, I look
forward to working with Jackie and the rest of the Steering
Committee to help achieve the goals she has laid out for her
term. And I encourage all of you to continue to support our
efforts and to make SSHD a significant part of your professional
identity!
